JUNE unemployment worsens amid turbulent times

UNEMPLOYMENT rose +1.3% in June month-on-month to 2 720 4 million jobless in Metropole, the second consecutive increase and +1.5% in one year as the number of men and women seeking work increased for all age groups while simultaneously the job vacancies decline reflected the feebleness of the labor market amid Euro area turbulences over debt concerns.

Including the French Overseas Department (DOM TOM) and all categories of people seeking work, the total number of jobless grew +0.6% to 4.3 million in June and +4.3% in one year.

In June and in Metropole, male unemployment climbed +1.6% to over 1.4 million while females' rose +0.9% to 1.3 million.  Per age group, male youth unemployment surged +1.4% to 435 500 jobless and among the 25-49 age bracket +1% to over 1.7 million. The over 50 recorded +2% jobless increase to 544 300.

Male youth unemployment rose +1.2% on the same period to 223 600 while female's climbed +1.7% to 211 900. For men between 25-40, unemployment increased +1.4% to 891 900 jobless while female's grew +0.5% to 848 700.
Among seniors (over 50 years old), the number of men unemployment jumped +2.3% to 288 400 and female's +1.6% to 255 900.   

The decline of job vacancies, -4% on the same period, reflected a weak labor market as long term job (over six months) offers fell -3.9% followed by temporary assignments (under six months) -0.8%. Occasional job offers (under one month) plunged -13.9%. In parallel, the number of jobless no longer registered at job centers due to new occupations edged up +0.5%  

In one year, vacancies (including the French West Indies Department) rose +3% as temporary assignments increased +8.7% while inversely, long term job offers grew a modest +0.5%.Occasional job offers decreased by 8%  
 
Per region and on the same period, unemployment in Paris Ile de France deteriorated and rose +2.3% to 493 700 jobless, the largest in number due to the region's size and economic weight. In Provence Alpes Côte D'Azur, (PACA) unemployment jumped +5.9% to 231 400 and in Nord Pas de Calais +1.3% to 214 500. Four regions recorded a decline in employment, Alsace -1.9% Franche Conté -7.1%, Lorraine -1.3% and Pays de la Loire -2.8%.

Male unemployment declined -0.8% while female's jumped +4.1%. Youth unemployment improved and decreased  by 4.4% while the seniors jobless rate jumped +13%. For the intermediate age bracket,25-49, unemployment stagnated or -0.1%   

In the French West Indies (DOM TOM) the number of jobless worsened and increased +7.7% to 229 800. The island of Reunion recorded the largest number of unemployed 117 200 or +9.2% followed by Guadeloupe's 55 200 or +6.9%, Martinique's 40 600 or +4.1% and French Guiana's 16 700 or +8.8%. Unlike Metropole, youth unemployment rose +5.2% and averaged +6.3% increase with the exception of Martinique where joblessness inched down -0.2%. In Metropole and in the French West Indies however, youth unemployed accounted for 14.5% and 14.6% of total youth out of work.
